Helicopter Summoned To Save Valley

EXTRA resources, including helicopters and specialist fire teams, were called in yesterday to help battle a large bushfire in a remote area of Howes Valley, south of Singleton.

The fire broke its containment lines yesterday afternoon and several National Parks and Wildlife Service remote area fire teams were called to the area.

Firefighters believe the fire, which burnt more than 100 hectares of the Yengo National Park yesterday, was caused by a lightning strike last week. They hope to contain it early today.

Rural firefighters were battling seven bushfires around the state yesterday, including an uncontained fire south of Sydney, in the Wingecarribee region.

A total fire ban is in place for most of southern NSW, with hot, dry and windy weather predicted.
