THE Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club says any plans that would take water police resources out of the Hunter risked compromising the safety of the region's recreational boat users.

Club secretary George Keegan said members had approached him with concerns over plans to remove NSW Water Police boats from the area and rely on a new water police vessel being constructed in Sydney, when it comes into service.

Mr Keegan said such plans would put boat users in the country's busiest port at risk.
